Personality:
So, we gonna talk about Bruno?
Yeah, there's a lot to say about Bruno....
Bruno Madrigal is a bundle of nerves and heart wrapped up in an oversized cloak of responsibility and reputation.
As a member of the Madrigal family he possesses an incredibly strong sense of familial and civic duty, one instilled at a very young age. And yet even if he didn't have that driving force, his innate compassion and kindness would insure that he would wish to help and care for others however he can, be they human or animal. Or monster. The good health and contentment of his many pet rats, for example, would speak to this, as would his decision to save Mirabel from falling into what they both thought was a deep hole rather than flee. And even though no good deed goes unpunished he consistently attempted to be of help to others, though his rather awkward warnings were taken as predictions rather than simple observations.
Moreover, he displays a poignant kind of loyalty--rather than leave the village or even the house when he went into hiding he remained within the walls for ten years, unable to cut himself off completely. Even his decision to hide in the first place was done out of kindness and loyalty to protect Mirabel, only a small child at the time, who he saw as potentially a target for endless blame should what he knew came to light despite her innocence.
Despite flashes of real courage, however, Bruno is deeply neurotic. This is evidenced most obviously by his extensive use of superstition--countless little rituals meant to bring good luck or ward off bad, thoroughly unsurprising in someone thought of as a harbinger of doom by so many! He has to talk himself into using his own powers (repeating "I can do this..."), and that was only after he was outlogicked and convinced to do so by Mirabel and Antonio. He approaches hesitantly, his voice quiet, his posture hunched and almost furtive, but it's clear he wants to interact.
He is also, perhaps just as unsurprisingly, rather depressive. He has a tendency to assume the worst, particularly where the outcome of his own actions is concerned. It's one of the other reasons he destroyed the evidence of the vision he had regarding the future of the family's magic, citing that he knew he would also be blamed for the disaster it apparently showed. And even though he also knew said future was uncertain, the image showing two very different things, he jumped to the conclusion that the result would be negative. He has much more faith in others than he does in himself.
And yet he isn't without his moments of joy and humour. He is boundlessly creative, coming up with anything from varied stories for his 'rat theatre' ("Sports? Game shows? Telenovelas? Ah, their love could never be.") to alternate identities for himself, possibly to break up the monotony of a lonely existence patching up walls from the inside ("My name is Jorge. I make the spackle."). Despite not being much of an artist he decorated the inside of his little hideaway, even going so far as to paint a faux place setting for himself. He's also very resourceful, having eked out an existence for ten years, improvising necessities, without being seen by anyone and only being heard by the one with super-hearing.
