Bruno's back and he's not re-integrating very well. Ten years in the walls has not been kind to him, after all. Maybe he has it out with the others, or he tries to hide again, or starts some unhealthy coping or other. Maybe his Gift finally destroyed his health.

A3. H/C!
Bruno's back and other people are not happy about this fact. There may be, for example, an increasing belief that he's demonic and clearly in need of an exorcism.

[What really kills him is he wants to join them more often than he does, but sometimes he's just exhausted and has to find a quiet place so he can rest.

When Casita was rebuilt his room was on the same floor as the others' again, and had become the kind of inviting that it had been years and years ago. There were times, though, when he couldn't spend too long in it, too many conflicting thoughts swirling in his head. In fact, the only way he can really rest, sometimes, is to hide in a completely new hole in the wall.

Yes, a new hole. He'd begged and cajoled Casita into helping him create a new one, but the sapient house had a few tricks up its wainscoting, making it much easier for others to find it, this time. So when Luisa doesn't find him in his room a painting rattles against the wall and then swings open, revealing not so much a hole as a neat opening, planks laid down to make a sturdy walkway. It's a short distance to a space with a tapestry over it this time, soft dim light glowing behind it.

Behind the tapestry, instead of the tragic packrat space crammed full of desperate memories like what Mirabel had described, is a cozy little room with a dim lamp, a lot of books, a group of sleek little rats quietly doing... rat things, and a hammock with the object of her search nested in blankets and pillows and blinking sleepily at her.]

Hm? Luisa? Wh's going on?

[ While she'd had some idea of the space Bruno had lived in within the walls of Casita thanks to Mirabel, Luisa still thanks the house when it reveals the opening behind the painting, allowing her to step inside and look for her uncle.

And the room she comes across is quite different from the one Mirabel had described in the old Casita. It has a warmer feeling to it, even compared to his new room, so she can understand why he would prefer to spend time in here.

When she spots him she offers a small smile. ]

Hey, Tío Bruno. I just wanted to let you know it was time for dinner.

[sandinmyhair]

[He smiles softly, a bit amused.] I guess I can come out. Let everyone know I haven't packed up my rats and moved to Bermuda.

[The most random things fall out of this man's face, sometimes.]

[First he yawns and stretches and scratches his scalp, which leaves his hair even fluffier.] How'd you find me?

[neverbreaks]

[ Her expression turns a bit more puzzled, though the smile still remains on her face. She can't entirely remember if he's always been strange or if it was something that happened in the walls.

It wasn't really a bad thing, though. Just a little strange and funny. ]

Mirabel had mentioned that you had a place in the walls, and when I couldn't find you in your room, Casita showed me the opening behind the painting.

[Oh, he's odder now. He always has been, but now so much moreso.]

Betrayed by my own home, [he murmurs, fondly patting a wall.]

[He pulls the blankets off of himself and leaves the hammock, though this already leaves him a little breathless. Keenly aware of this, he gives a sheepish smile as he pushes his bare feet into his sandals.]

Sorry, this is taking a miscarriage in six days... [He stumbles and nearly falls, eyes glowing.]

[neverbreaks]

[ Luisa gasps and rushes forward, reaching out to help keep him steady. ]

Tío Bruno? Are you okay?

[It's quite the stumble, and when she catches him it becomes all too obvious just how small and frail he is. It's like holding a baby bird, a fragile little thing, so warm as to feel almost fevered.

He looks up after a moment, eyes back to normal and a sheepish look on his face.]

Sorry. Visions. They... sometimes hit me out of the blue....

[neverbreaks]

[ It's very obvious, and a part of Luisa worries about holding him wrong somehow, that she might accidentally hurt him if she wasn't careful. ]

So...you had a vision just now? I didn't know you got them any time like that.

[ Then again, there was a lot she doesn't know about his Gift. Mirabel had told her that he had some rituals in order to summon a vision, but she didn't know that he could have them without those rituals. ]

Are you gonna be okay? [ It seems to have taken a lot out of him. ]

[She's more gentle than she gives herself credit for. He seems unharmed and, in fact, comforted, and rests against her arm for a moment.]

Yeah, someone should warn Señora Martinez she's gonna miscarry. [He sighs a tired, melancholy sigh.] I hate visions like those... poor thing. But if you know something like that's coming you can brace for it... doesn't hurt quite as much if it's not out of the blue, y'know? [A beat, then he gives a quiet, rueful laugh.] Well, not out of the blue for anyone but me. I've had random visions occasionally for as long as I remember.

[He looks up at Luisa with a sad smile.] I'll be okay. [His eyes aren't wet, that's just a trick of the light. Honest.]

[neverbreaks]

[ Luisa can't help frowning deeply as she watches her uncle. She had never understood the extent of the visions he received, or the toll that it must take on him. ]

...I'm sorry. I can't imagine what that must be like. [ It's only made even worse, thinking how the people in town assumed that he was responsible for the bad futures they received. As if he had any say in how they turned out.

There was just so much pain that her gentle tío didn't deserve at all. ]

I don't think anyone can, and that's okay. I mean, I can't imagine what it's like to hear everything ever, or to change the weather with my moods... or to be afraid of breaking anything I touch. [He smiles a soft, knowing smile.] I see how hesitant you are. And I've also seen how it's been years and years since you hurt any of us. You're a lot more gentle than you give yourself credit for, you know.

[He blinks as an idea comes to him.] I'll come downstairs with you, but first I wanna show you something, okay?

[neverbreaks]

[ She blinks, a little surprised that he had been paying attention to something like that. ]

Y...Yeah, I guess so... [ She rubs her arm a bit. ] Even so, I still...have to be careful. Even just the smallest slip up could be bad.

[ Even if it has been some time since she's hurt anyone, she knows she always has to maintain control of her strength. But most people never really noticed that she still works hard to not cause any kind of accident.

When he mentions wanting to show her something, though, she can't help feeling a little curious, and after a moment she nods. ] Okay.

[It's what Bruno does. He notices things. Pays attention to people. Sometimes it gets him into trouble when he's too vague about telling people just what it is that he notices, but he isn't going to stop any time soon. He cares too much.

He makes his way to a steamer trunk and flicks open the latches, nattering away while he looks for something inside.]

I've had a lot of time to think during the last ten years. And I've had a lot to think about. Mostly about rat telenovelas but--whups [He fumbles something and a few rats scurry out of the trunk,] but! I've also had time to think about our Gifts and how we handle them. Or don't handle them in my case.... [Mumbles,] it's in here, somewhere.... [Then,] We've all been kind of afraid of them. Pepa grew up terrified of her own lightning. Isabela grew up terrified of not being perfect. Juli--oh, so there's where that went--Juli has always been afraid of things she can't heal. You overhear a lot when you're in the walls and don't have anything to do. Camilo sometimes doubts he even knows who he is. And Dolores plugs up her ears and begs for silence. So... uh, where was I going with this? Right. Gifts. A lot of them could be dangerous. But that's the thing with dangerous. It's something you need to respect, not fear. I know that's a fine line. Ahah! Here it is!

[He comes up with a bag of the same green fabric as his ruana, complete with the same hourglass embroidery. He keeps talking as he pushes the trunk shut with a foot.] These are all so old... they're from back when I had a little showmanship about my Gift. I used to say my real gift was acting, after all.

[Focus is a thing that mainly happens to other people. Bruno plops the bag on top of the trunk and pulls it open, coughing a little on the dust. He rummages a bit and then pulls out a deck of tarot cards.] Used to use these to add a bit of flair to my smaller visions. But they're good for meditating on things, too. Ever seen something like these?

[ As Bruno rummages through the trunk, Luisa steps a bit closer, at first just to see what else was inside it, and leaning in a bit to get a peek.

But as he talks she can't help frowning a little. The argument between Mirabel and Abuela, and the house falling apart had certainly brought some things into light. But while they had been working to resolving those issues, she was still surprised as he listed each of their fears. It did make some sense that he had heard things while living in the walls, but...how had they all missed so much over the years?

When he retrieves the deck of tarot cards, she looks at it curiously before shaking her head. ] No, I don't...think so.
